a bright spark- and pretty

8 Mar

eco-warriors have long known that to entice the average joe to embrace the green thing it’s often best to marry the product to a pretty design.

designers samuel wilkinson and hulger have successfully applied that bright idea to the humble bulb, that beacon of homeliness and the hero of modern civilisation’s conquest of the night.

the result is plumen, a good-looking low energy bulb that uses 80 percent less energy and lasts eight times longer than conventional incandescent bulbs.

its ingenuity has been rewarded at the Brit Insurance 2011 design awards, where it topped the product category.

you can check out the simple beauty of the bulbs at london’s design museum or even get your hands on one in their website- if you live in the uk.
